Here's what I think: the etched crown is less visible on newer Rolex watches. Comparing my recently acquired 114060 to my previous 14060M, there's a big difference in the visibility of the etched crown. Picked up a replacement brand spanking new (new style serial number) GMTiiC yesterday and the crown is there as was it on the faulty 'G Serial Number' one I bought 3 weeks earlier. Hope that helps.
